The group of imprints known collectively as NB Publishers consists of Tafelberg, Human & Rousseau, Pharos, Kwela Books and Best Books. All of these cater in part to the children and youth market.
We publish an eclectic range of children’s books: from international co-publications of glossy picture books to textbooks and readers in South Africa’s indigenous languages and everything in between. Cookbooks for kids, school dictionaries and even timeless classics like Robinson Crusoe, White Fang and Sherlock Holmes and super-heroes like Tintin and Asterix.
Established in 1951, Tafelberg is best known for publishing children and youth literature in all the country’s languages. Many Tafelberg books are perennial favourites in the schools market with edgy new titles also gaining prominence.
Established in 1959 with the aim to publish mainly Afrikaans books, it now publishes a large number of English titles. The children’s publishing division focuses mainly on the general market, although we are making great strides in the schools market.
Pharos is the only dedicated dictionary publisher in South Africa.
The mission of Kwela Books is to make the South African book culture more inclusive; to nurture and promote exciting local writing talent of established as well as new writers; to spread a love of reading by producing books accessible and interesting to the broader community, while at the same time honouring as ultimate guidelines quality and integrity.
Best Books is the educational division of NB Publishers and was established in 1996. The imprint specialises in, and is renowned for the development of integrated language texts and language series and has recently begun publishing Afrikaans and English literature with accompanying teacher’s guides for Further Education and Training.
NB Publishers publish approximately 100 children’s books per year. About 40 percent of these are co-productions and the balance are written and illustrated by our local talent.
Tafelberg, together with the insurance company, Sanlam, run the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature every two years.
The Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature is awarded to encourage the writing of youth literature aimed at the age group of 12 to 18 years.
There are six categories for which entries can be submitted: Afrikaans, English, Nguni languages, Sotho languages, Tshivenda and Xitsonga.
Human & Rousseau are currently running a writing competition in conjunction with You, Huisgenoot and Drum, SABC Education and RSG’s on-air writing school, Zip. I’m a writer is the biggest writing competition for unpublished young aspiring authors.
We are looking for young and funky work written in Afrikaans, English or any Sotho or Nguni language. There are three categories:
The length of the novel should be between 25,000-50,000 words. This competition is restricted to persons under the age of 35.
