Gavin Thomson was born in Cape Town in 1968. From 1988 to 1989 he studied advertising at the Art Directors Workshop in Cape Town. He went on to work as a colourist and inker in a London-based character studio, working with clients and characters such as Disney, Warner Bros., Power Rangers, VR Troopers, Sooty and Sweep, Where’s Wally and Tot’s TV. He returned to South Africa in 1997.

From 1997 to 2002 he worked as a graphic designer for a well-known children’s clothing company. Since then he has been doing illustrations and cartoons for education textbooks and newspapers throughout southern Africa. He lives in Noordhoek, Cape Town and drives a blue 1972 Volksie Beetle.
