The making of young literary readers in Kenya

Pamela M. Y. Ngugi

Children's literature in Kenya has seen major developments in the recent past. Many publishing firms are now devoted more or less exclusively to literature for children and young people.
Despite all these major developments, there is still a cry from scholars and publishers that Kenyans in general have not developed a reading culture. Their fear is that this trend will trickle down to the children. Because of the education system offered to them, most children and young people are familiar with functional reading as something one does to prepare for examinations. This paper will address the major factors that contribute to the lack of enthusiasm in reading among children. Secondly, it sets out to look at what is being done by various groups of people concerned in order to instill a love and respect for books and for reading in children and young people.
