A decade of democracy in South African children's books. Exhibition of South African children's books and children's book illustrations held at Museu das Criancas, Lisbon and Colégio Nossa Senhora do Rosário, Av da Boavista, Porto, Portugal

This exhibition was presented on invitation of the South African Embassy in celebration of the 10th year of South Africa's democracy. It coincided with the Freedom Day celebrations of the Embassy.

The exhibition was officially opened on 20 April by the South African ambassador in Lisbon, Ms Elsa Dry. 

The exhibition included a collection of 90 SA children's books and 30 original children's books illustrations depicting the changes that have taken place and the openness of society experienced in South Africa since the first democratic elections in 1994. The themes represented by the exhibition are: the objective representation of history; the openness of relationships and friendships; new attention to previously disadvantaged cultural groups; free and equal education to all; equal health services to all people; freedom fighters for the new SA; etcetera.

Parallel to the Democracy Exhibition, a representative collection of about 350 children`s books with also be displayed to present the wide range of books available to South African children for leisure and educational reading
