Jude Daly

Jude Daly, née Kenny was born on 24 August 1951 in London, UK. In 1953 her family immigrated to South Africa where she spent her childhood in Fish Hoek, Cape Town.. She attended the Star of the Sea Convent in St James, Cape Town and matriculated from Springfield Convent, Wynberg, Cape Town.
She then attended the Cape Technical College but didn’t complete her course in Graphic Design. "In retrospect it was a good thing as it meant I never mastered being slick and I hope my work reflects this".
After college she went to London where she did a secretarial course and worked in various such positions on a mainly temporary basis. She never regarded that as a career, merely as a way to earn a living and meet local people. "Then I became a mother which I regard as a lifelong occupation. The most important and extraordinary I could ever wish for. Now I am also an illustrator of children’s books which I take very seriously as an occupation and for which I have a great love".
Jude is married to Niki Daly, a writer and illustrator of children’s books. They have two sons, Joseph and Leo. She describes her interests as music, art and "the quirkiness of people".

Jude received several awards for her work:

The Hungry Mind Review selected The Dove (written by Dianne Stewart) as one of its children’s books of distinction in 1994.

Gift of the Sun (written by Dianne Stewart) was selected Smithsonian’s notable book in 1996; Notable Children’s Trade book (Social science) in 1997; and it won the Katrine Harries Award for Children’s book illustrations in 1997. It was also chosen as one of the South African entries for the IBBY Honours List in 1996. She also won the Katrine Harries Award for The Stone.
